In Florida, we have the luxury of being able to use our pools for the majority of the year in comparison to other states in the country, especially if the pool has a heating system. If you are suffering from arthritis, your pool could be your best friend!
According to the Arthritis Foundation, there are three most common forms of arthritis including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile arthritis. All three of these forms of arthritis share the common factor of pain and discomfort. Arthritis can be caused by injury or inflammation, which may cause stiffness, difficulty of movement, and pain.

The Arthritis Foundation is a large supporter of swimming and water exercise for those suffering from arthritis. Because of water’s buoyancy, it reduces the weight your body has to bear. This decreases it to 30% when your body is immersed in water up to the chest. That means that any movement made in the water is low impact, which puts little stress on your joints.

Research shows that water exercise and swimming can improve strength, range of movement and decrease pain. A study published in the Cochrane Library found improvement in physical function, pain, mental health and quality of life in participants who engaged in aquatic exercise and movement regularly.
